Core rules
The complete rules of Cali Commander as of Beta v0.1, stated once, with the undecided parts labeled undecided instead of "coming in the tournament packet."
Deck construction
- Normal Commander deck construction unless stated otherwise.
- 100 cards total, including the commander or commanders.
- Singleton, except basic lands and cards that specifically say otherwise.
- Color identity rules apply.
- Partner and other official commander-pairing mechanics are legal unless a specific commander is banned.
Gameplay
- 1v1.
- Players start at 30 life. (Set by a 58-voter poll; the rerun with verified accounts is open now.)
- The player who takes the first turn does not draw on their first draw step.
- 21 commander damage applies. Note that it was calibrated for 40-life multiplayer and has not been recalibrated for 30.
- The banlist applies. The watch list does not; watched cards are legal.
Openly undecided
These are real questions the format has not answered. Listing them beats pretending they are settled:
- Best-of-one or best-of-three for tournaments. The Denver event's structure publishes with its full details on the events page.
- Whether 21 commander damage is the right number at 30 life.
- Whether combo is too protected at 30 life.
- Mulligan rules for competitive play.
- Sideboards, if best-of-three.
When these get answered, the answers appear here, in the change log, and in an announcement, all on the same day.
